I'm not going to pretend Nintendo Switch Pro rumors are a new thing. They have been around since the original Switch lauched.
But while back then, most of it was wishful thinking or speculation, since about a year ago, the rumors started to gain a more solid ground and credible look.
That said, maybe because of COVID-19, maybe because of the silicon chip shortage or maybe because the rumors were just rumors all along, nothing came to surface.
Now we are back at it again, with multiple sources corroborating the Switch Pro announcement should be happening very soon. Either before E3 or at the event. With most sources claiming the release date to be around September.
The entire thing blew up after Amazon Mexico listed the model for sale, removing it shortly after. They did the same thing before, with Spyro Trilogy and Apex Legends, and both were announced shortly after.
If all the information being shoved around is to be believed, this is what we can expect from the new Switch model:
- Same physical size, but bigger OLED screen.
- Compatible with current accessories, including Joycons.
- A better kickstand.
- A bigger dock, with 2 USB 3.0 and an ethernet port.
- 4K TV output. Probably using NVIDIA DLSS 2.0
If this information turns out to be true, we are looking at a good upgrade to the current model. Although with the internal components changes still being a mystery, it is hard to say how good.
What most people agree with is that the price will be higher than the current $300, with some speculation it could reach up to $400. Personally, I think $350 could be a good price point for it, depending on how much more powerful it is.
While a new model would not invalidade the current one, it is said that Nintendo plans on phasing it out over time. Similar to what Microsoft did with the original Xbox One model.
Regardless though, the most interesting part about a more powerful Switch has to be the games. There is no shortage of titles that could benefit from the extra power. Including the sequel to Breath of the Wild, Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4.
